Random Thoughts from Mister Pterodactyl
Damn it, I can't remember any of my random thoughts.

I remember this, though: 'Wookiee' is spelled with two E's. TWO! Nerds, beware.

That thought prompted by a discussion of the new Star Wars from the redoubtable Vodkapundit (for those of you who didn't investigate the link). This suggests further Random Thoughts, such as: do I really care about Lucas' political beliefs? Go ahead and make fun, but 'Mystery Men' is one of my favorite movies. I've watched it many times. Should I allow my enjoyment to be sullied by Janeane Garofalo's inane commentary? No, I shouldn't, and yet I do. Sometimes.
But that's not really my point. Lucas has himself discussed a possible interpretation of some of the themes in Star Wars in which the Empire's rise mirrors certain events of yesterday, and today. [I can't be bothered to enumerate them. You all know what they are.] He has not, however, claimed a sagelike (dare I say 'Yodalike'?) prescience. That is, when he wrote the story he wasn't anticipating current events. The parallels, if any, are incidental and accidental. If you're seeing them, you're seeing what you want to see, not what he put there.

That said, I must apologize to Old Whig for not following up on his meme. My only excuse is that I was distracted by a comment from Liberty Bob. [Howdy, neighbor!] To wit, when people discuss the books they'd want to have when stranded on an island, why don't they choose books that might help them get off the island? Dang. I'm stuck with Aristotle and Plato (complete works, natch), my Sandman graphic novels (that only counts as one, right?) and my Lovecraft collection. I thought about the Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy, but it turns out that's fictional.
I can't remember the last book I bought. Probably the "Teach Yourself Latin!" text that's still gathering dust on my bookshelf. I've always wanted to learn Latin, but apparently not that bad. The last book I got from the library was "The Golden Ratio: The Story of Phi, the World's Most Astonishing Number."

Latin, probably not that handy on a desert island. Mathematics? Maybe.

Why 'desert island,' anyway? I'm guessing it's supposed to be 'deserted.' Which it would be, if I had a book that could get me off it.
Comments:
Here I thought I was supposed to build a libertarian society there. I've got a couple survival books that might have been useful, but I didn't bring them, so now I'm stuck waiting for Friday to save my useless arse.

Think he'll be a libertarian?

I'd call it likely. He no doubt grew up in a small community of hunter/gatherers that practiced a primitive form of socialism by necessity, but being that he's no longer part of that group I'd say he aspired to greater freedom than it could offer and left to find it. Lucky for you.
